‘Design is more than just an architectural component ... Design is also the speech we use to build and give meaning to the world around us.’
— Lola Olufemi, Experiments in Imagining Otherwise
Join us for Hajar Reads: Infrastructure. In this reading and discussion group, we’ll consider the infrastructures that shape our societies and our lives—from systems of housing and healthcare to rules and designs that regulate ‘private’ and ‘public’ space. What are the impacts of these infrastructures? And how could they be reorganised to better meet our needs?
We’ll use short extracts from selected Hajar Press titles—including Brick by Brick (Cradle Community), Experiments in Imagining Otherwise (Lola Olufemi), Pearls from Their Mouth (Pear Nuallak) and Curious Affinities (Sophie Chauhan)—as a starting point for our discussion.
Extracts will be shared in advance of the session, but there’s no expectation to have read them all to take part—just come along ready to listen, think and share!
‘What role do broken systems play in breaking bodies?’
— Sophie Chauhan, Curious Affinities
This session, co-hosted by Hajar Press and Mosaic Rooms, will be facilitated by Amber Obasi from Hajar Press, Saeed El-Hassan from Mosaic Rooms and Akil Scafe-Smith from RESOLVE Collective.

Hajar Reads is a new reading and discussion space open to all. Each month, we take a themed selection of extracts from Hajar Press titles as a starting point to imagine beyond the way things are and reflect on our responsibilities to the world and to each other.
For early access to spaces at Hajar Reads, consider joining our subscription; we release a limited number of early free spots to our subscribers every month.
